Event Overview

2020 Landour Mela #

The year was 2020, a year that felt like a surreal dream—shrouded in uncertainty and fear, as the world grappled with the relentless grip of the COVID-19 pandemic. Landour and Mussoorie, once vibrant and bustling with tourists, transformed into hushed havens, where the echoes of laughter and merriment faded into haunting whispers.

The air, once fragrant with the spice of local cuisine and the laughter of visitors, now hung heavy with an eerie silence. Quaint cafes that lined the cobbled streets remained shuttered, their colourful facades dulled by emptiness. The panoramic views that usually brought solace to thousands were now a bittersweet reminder of what had been lost. Despite the tranquil beauty of nature surrounding them, the inhabitants of Landour and Mussoorie found themselves living in an unexpected reality.

As the pandemic swept across continents, its tendrils reached even the smallest pockets of civilization, and Landour was not to be spared. The avenues, once alive with the hustle of visitors enjoying evening strolls, were now ghostly paths, with only the occasional rustle of leaves or the distant call of a bird punctuating the stillness. The town braced itself as news filtered in—cases of COVID-19 began to emerge, creeping through the community like an uninvited guest. The windows of opportunity for tourism, which had been cracked open and closed in fits and starts, swung precariously in the balance, shutting out the cheerful sounds of travel that had once defined the region.

In the face of this unprecedented crisis, the organisers of the cherished Landour Mela found ourselves at a crossroads. With heavy hearts, we were compelled to make the painstaking decision to cancel the event that many looked forward to each year. The vibrant celebration that had brought people together—the music, the laughter, the shared enjoyment of local food and art—would have to wait. Guided by the prudent advice of local authorities and public health safety measures, the community united in a commitment to protect one another. The guiding light of responsibility eclipsed the desire for festivities, and in our wisdom, we recognised that safety was paramount.

Though the absence of the Mela left a palpable void, the spirit of Landour endured. Neighbours found creativity in solitude, reinventing ways to connect through small acts of kindness. Artists took to their canvases, expressing the range of emotions that swirled within them, painting the landscapes in swirling hues of hope and melancholy. Local musicians, keeping rhythms alive from their balconies, strummed familiar melodies into the emptiness, echoing an unwavering sense of camaraderie.

#LM2020 Highlights

As the year unfolded in its peculiar manner, it birthed a new narrative—a one that whispered tales of resilience and loyalty. The residents discovered the beauty of slowing down amidst the chaos, taking leisurely walks through the striking landscapes, their senses invigorated by the crisp mountain air. Families emerged from their homes, sharing stories around cozy fires, savouring moments they would often rush past in the hustle of the Mela. Nature, meanwhile, prospered in the graceful silence, filling the valleys with wildflowers and the sweet sound of rustling leaves, a testament to the possibility of rebirth.

2020, while stolen of festivities, gifted those in Landour and Mussoorie a collective introspection—a chance to cherish old traditions while dreaming of the future. With each passing day, visions of the Mela danced like flickering lanterns in their minds, vibrant and full of life, promising that while the present may be dimmer, the future would shine brighter. With every cancellation, there grew a determination—built on hope, love, and an unwavering spirit—that next year would not just return to the familiar, but would perhaps reveal an even deeper appreciation for the community that flourished, together, among the hills.
